elderberry, elderflower, and everything in between

Greetings! I am delighted to join this group. Wondering if anyone has experience with horses--do they eat the elderberry trees, berries, flowers, etc? If so, is this alright or they toxic to horses? Thank you.

Hi, Katie. I have Elderberries and horses, and the two do mix...none of my horses (7) have shown any kind of interest in the shrubs, and I have a couple that will grab leaves out of other trees.....Susan
Hi Susan, Okay, that is, of course, what I wanted to hear! Great news. I did read that elderberries can be toxic but that horses are not inclined towards them, which is what you are saying, too, so I will plant elderberries. Thank you so much.

Katie, I watch my horses with my wild cherry trees, if you have any, keep an eye on them. If I understand correctly, it's not just the cherry trees but a certain time of year under certain conditions. What do you know about this?

HI Susan,
I have always heard that it is the dried leaves of cherry trees that are harmful to horses, either on the ground or on a dead tree. I'm not sure about the bark. We have horses and cherry trees, and we do watch them but they don't seem to bother with them much.

7 horses! We have 4 now, and 1 mule. We just sold one of our horses. Would love to chat about horses but am not sure this is the place to do that. If you want to, let me know and we can connect about it. Thanks,, Katie

I too am new.I am so excited to find this site.I have several horses and many many Elders.I have never seen one of my horses eat Elders.I did however, have a cow that loved them.My new cow doesn't seem to care for them at all.To each his own I suppose.
